The Photography of Modernist Cuisine is the first large-format, high-quality art book from Nathan Myhrvold and the Modernist Cuisine team. Encouraged by the feedback on our photographs in our first books, we decided to take some of the best shots from our library of more than 200,000 images and print them as a collection. The photos are even larger and on nicer paper than in our previous books. The Photography of Modernist Cuisine focuses on the art of food as seen from intriguing, new perspectives. Revealed through hundreds of jaw-dropping photographs, it includes some of the most iconic images from Modernist Cuisine and Modernist Cuisine at Home, as well as many new and unpublished photos.
The Photography of Modernist Cuisine features 405 stunning photographs. The photographs are organized into five chapters, including Plants, Animals, Cutaways, Cooking, and Phenomena. In these chapters, you’ll find cutaway images of food and equipment, levitating food, and food in motion, as well as macro and microscopy photography. In addition to the photographs, the book contains stories behind the photos, behind-the-scenes techniques, and a description of Nathan’s photographic journey.
While the photographs are the hero of the book, there is much more to learn. The Photography of Modernist Cuisine takes you into Modernist Cuisine Lab’s revolutionary kitchen and photo studio for a visual, behind-the-scenes tour that reveals the special equipment and techniques used to create the team’s culinary inventions and spectacular images.
You’ll also discover the story behind each of the iconic images in the book, as well as practical tips for shooting your own food photography including advice on how to get the best angles and lighting. Whether you’re at home or in a restaurant, we give you tips to work with the gear you have on hand, including a point-and-shoot camera or simply a mobile phone.
The Photography of Modernist Cuisine features large-format spreads that are almost 60% larger than in Modernist Cuisine and Modernist Cuisine at Home, offering stunning views of food like you’ve never seen before. In addition, it’s printed on premium LumiSilk 200 gsm matte art paper.
A true feast for the eyes, The Photography of Modernist Cuisine is the ultimate coffee-table book for food lovers, photo buffs, book collectors, and anyone who appreciates the natural beauty of food. Aspiring photographers will find useful tips on how to frame and shoot their own professional-quality photographs of food in both the restaurant and the home.
